Lot 41:
Description
This lot features two unmounted shell cameos carved in the Victorian style. Each piece is hand carved from natural shell in high relief, featuring a cream-colored classical female profile facing right against a mottled tan and brown background. The larger cameo depicts a woman with intricately styled hair wearing a beaded necklace and a single drop earring. The smaller cameo shows a woman with a floral hair ornament and draped attire. Both items are oval in shape and lack any visible metal settings, hallmarks, or maker’s marks. These unmounted shells are characteristic of 19th-century souvenir or jewelry components intended for gold or silver mounting.
Condition report:
Both cameos exhibit visible surface wear and localized orange and brown staining within the carved recesses and across the background fields. No significant chips or cracks are visible to the shell edges.
