Lot 91:
Description
An assortment of military and fraternal uniform components and regalia, primarily of United States and United Kingdom origin, dating from the late 19th to mid-20th century. The collection includes over 100 buttons of various sizes and finishes. Military examples include United States Army general service buttons featuring the eagle and shield motif and United States Navy buttons with anchor designs. Several large brass decorative buttons are present, bearing the inscription Ludovicus Rex Plurimorum Orbis around a central crest, a pattern associated with historical recreations or theatrical use. Fraternal items include regalia from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), notably a large enameled shield pendant for the Brighton branch dated 1911. Other IOOF-related items include a molded pin with the three-link chain symbol, gilt-metal pins spelling the word PAST, and various ribbons including a red, white, and blue tricolor and a silver-colored bullion fringe ribbon. The lot is accompanied by a tan, oval-shaped cowhide leather case with a snap closure, resembling a traditional Florentine-style coin or collar-button case, containing additional small pins, cufflinks, and collar studs.
Condition report:
The items are in varied vintage condition. Metal buttons and pins show degrees of oxidation, tarnish, and patina consistent with age. The enamel on the IOOF pendant remains bright with minor surface scratches. The leather case is in good condition, remaining supple with a functional snap fastener. The cardboard storage tray shows significant age-related wear and fragmentation.
