Description

A stylized female figure produced in the Dhokra lost-wax casting tradition, characteristic of the Bastar region of India. The sculpture is cast from a brass or bronze alloy, exhibiting the distinct corded texture and surface irregularities associated with the traditional cire perdue process. The figure is rendered with an elongated torso and limbs, standing on an integral circular base. She is depicted holding a shallow bowl in her right hand and a stylized bird or ceremonial object in her raised left hand. The figure is adorned with a textured loincloth, a necklace, and a swept-back headdress or hairstyle. The facial features are minimalist with almond-shaped eyes. This style of metalwork shares aesthetic similarities with certain West African ethnographic traditions, such as Bamum or Tikar casting, though the specific form and motifs are indicative of Dhokra handicrafts.
Height: Approximately 7 to 8 inches (18 to 20 cm).

Condition report:

The figure retains a golden-toned brass patina with dark oxidation present in the recessed areas of the casting. The item shows minor surface wear, pitting, and small scratches consistent with the casting method and age.
